What is Walk & Talk Therapy?

Walk & Talk Therapy is a unique opportunity to connect with nature while simultaneously doing a therapy session. It takes place outdoors, typically in a park or somewhere along the canal. You set the pace and we walk side by side as we discuss.  If the weather is bad, we can decide to do an online session for that week.

What are some of the benefits?

  • It can offer an alternative to online or in-office therapy which is not always comfortable for some

  • Connection to nature is extremely beneficial to your mental health

  • Physical exercised leads to a healthier habits & better mood

  • The act of moving forward can give us an opportunity to get "unstuck"

  • Our eyes will naturally move side to side, creating the same effect as bilateral stimulation in EMDR, which can help us process faster.

Is it confidential?

I will do my best to ensure confidentiality but seeing as it takes place outside, parts of conversations could be overheard and there is more potential to run into people you may know. We will however discuss all of your concerns and how to best address them before proceeding.

What is EMDR?

EMDR is Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing is an evidence-based therapy which uses a structured approach and bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, light bar or hand buzzers) to reduce the intensity of your nervous system's response to a memory. Though it was originally used to treat PTSD, EMDR is also beneficial for grief, anxiety, chronic pain, addictions, big T and little t traumas and many other life challenges.

What is the difference between talk therapy & somatic approaches?

Talk therapy uses a top-down approach to tackle a challenge you are facing, meaning that it will use a lot of reflecting, discussing, analyzing, and problem-solving around behaviours, thoughts and emotions, to address the problem. It can be very beneficial for some challenges and is what many people may have already experienced in therapy. Some examples include CBT, DBT, Solutions-Focused, IPT.

Somatic approaches use a bottom-up approach, tapping into the inherent wisdom of the body and its ability to heal if given the proper tools, space and safety. The focus is much more on body sensations and the holding patterns that have been developed internally because of painful past learning. With somatic approaches, you may be invited to move, get up, walk around, try different postures and movements during a session. Some examples include IFS, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Polyvagal Theory, Mindfulness practices. Yoga could also be considered a somatic tool.

What is your cancellation policy?

There is a strict cancellation/no-show policy in effect if you do not provide 24 hour notice. You will be charged the session time if this happens.

How do I know if it is a good fit for me?

I am happy to have a free 15 minute phone consultation with you to discuss your needs before you decide. Finding the right fit is very important!
